ROCKAWAY, NJ // AUGUST 23, 2016: The infamously bizarre, genre-bending art rock outfit Will Wood and the Tapeworms have recently taken over New Jersey’s music scene with what The Aquarian called “the epitome of a performance,” and AXS Entertainment called “a journey into glittering hysteria.” In the year since their formation, Will Wood and the Tapeworms have garnered intense press reactions, and gathered an exponentially growing cult following that shows no signs of slowing. After teaming up with New Noise Magazine to premiere the album [LINK], and months of teasing and hinting, today Will Wood and the Tapeworms finally release their sophomore full-length LP, a chaotic and colorful crowd-funded concept album entitled Self-ish.

Produced by Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Kevin Antreassian and featuring performances by members of Foxy Shazam and Frank Iero and the Cellabration, Self-ish showcases some of the most intensely unique and avant-garde work of eccentric and “intriguing and histrionic” (The Star-Ledger) pianist and singer-songwriter Will Wood, as well as virtuosic instrumental performances by guitarist Mike Bottiglieri, saxophonist David Higdon, and bassist/engineer Jonathon Maisto. Wood’s constantly shifting style and genre-bending mania make Will Wood and the Tapeworms’ sound hard to pin down. Self-ish features latin influences, progressive rock arrangements, emo/punk attitude, and wild mood swings- drawing comparisons to everyone from Tom Waits and Mr. Bungle to David Bowie and My Chemical Romance.

‘Self-ish’ is now available on Spotify, Bandcamp, iTunes and all digital platforms.

Will Wood and the Tapeworms’ music video for single, “Mr. Capgras Encounters a Secondhand Vanity,”premiered via Fangoria [LINK] with a music video by international action filmmaker Adam Nawrot just a few weeks ago and has caught a lot of eyes with its monochromatic madness, body paint, cross-dressing, nudity, and sarcastic glamour. The teeth-gnashing fervor of the song contrasts sharply with the vanity of the video, much like how each song contrasts with the next on Self-ish. The other two singles “2012,”premiered at AXS Entertainment [LINK] and “Dr. Sunshine is Dead” premiered on Horror Society [LINK]could have been performed by entirely different bands, were if not for Wood’s distinctly manic lyrical stylings and the bombastic theatricality of these tightly-orchestrated pieces. This disjointed, maddening variety makes Self-ish a unique listen- and puts Will Wood and the Tapeworms in a league of their own.

On August 19th, Will Wood and the Tapeworms debuted this twisted and powerful concept album front-to-back to a jam-packed full house at NJ’s famous Mexicali Live, where fans painted each other’s faces, crowd surfed, and threw flowers around the intimate venue, shocking the locals alongside powerhouse NJ-based acts Super Snake, Cicada Radio, Red Hymn, and Jean Pool. The highly-anticipated album release show was a prime example of why Dying Scene called getting up front at a Will Wood and the Tapeworms show, “a dangerous decision,” and had NJ.com calling them a“masterful mess,” after they opened for international punk outfit Gogol Bordello at Starland Ballroom in March. Violent, intense, colorful and chaotic- yet somehow still sentimental and human all at once. Will Wood and the Tapeworms present “Self-ish,” a powerful new record that will almost certainly be talked about for a long, long time.

Biography: Will Wood and the Tapeworms are a five-piece experimental rock outfit based out of northern New Jersey, lead by singer/songwriter and pianist Will Wood, who appeared entirely out of nowhere some time in 2015. Armed with cleverly-crafted and surreal anti-folk songs, Wood assembled a group of performers and began crashing around New Jersey covered in face paint and confetti. Unusual instrumentation, foreign scales, and highly theatrical performances give Will Wood and the Tapeworms a unique and hard-to-define voice. Will Wood and the Tapeworms dress up in drag and bowties, barrel around the stage hollering at the top of their lungs, and unpredictably swing from collapsing to their knees to collapsing into each others arms. And while the Tapeworms pump up audiences, Will Wood entertains with shockingly honest comedy and personal anecdotes about his life as a true eccentric. They regularly perform on the NJ/NY indie scene and plan to begin national touring soon.
