BROOKLYN | MARCH 3, 2023 …And they’re back! Punk icons The Tracys release their second single and music video of 2023, “Bully Bully Blockhead”, on YouTube and all streaming platforms on Friday, March 3rd following their single and video “A Soviet Mistake”. The full album, Welcome to The Land Of Nothing, will be dropping later this Spring.
True to their punk rock roots, the action-packed, the 1-minute 34-second song takes on bullies with great lyrics and infectious melody:
He’s a judge,
He’s a mayor,
He’s a klan,
He’s a cop
He’s a Blockhead, oh no!
Video designer and editor Matt Ernst, the drummer for The Tracys, created the video that seems to take inspiration from campy 1950s sci-fi and horror films, using footage from a recently re-discovered art film made for a gallery exhibit in NYC in 2001 just after the attacks on 9/11. Ernst’s painting studio at that time was on Greenwich St. below Canal in lower Manhattan just a few hundred yards from Ground Zero.
He made the film called The Sleep, starring his son 6-year-old son, Jonah, while the pile still smoldered, leaflets of the missing and dead fluttered from every fence and light pole. It was a way for Matt to keep working and process the feelings of anxiety and fear he and all New Yorkers felt at the time.
Upon recently discovering the raw footage on an old VHSC tape, Matt decided it would be apt and somehow poetic to turn this representation of abstract fear into a humorous video about a schoolyard bully’s comeuppance.
“Bully Bully Blockhead” was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Mike Abiuso at Behind the Curtains Media.
About: With infectious melodies and gallows humor, The Tracys’ brand of pop-punk holds true to the sensibilities of old-school west coast punk. Raised on 80’s punk with a side of maple syrup, Alberta native Dave Klym (The Mike Plume Band, The Populars, Itch) is the driving force behind the band’s monster hooks and blazing solos. On rhythm guitars, John Payne (Puppetbox) has been known to contribute harmonies as silky as his well-coiffed hair. Larry Mancini holds down the fort on the bass guitar with a little bit of whimsy, and a belly full of pizza. Anchoring this operation is drummer Matt Ernst, whose thunderous beats form the foundation for the group’s aggressive style.

Havoc Underground, February 2023
Narrative lyrical work takes you on a journey full of impressive musicianship, unique transitions, and singalong hooks. Equal parts comical and serious, “A Soviet Mistake” will make you crack a smile while at the same time appreciating the raw and anthemic sound The Tracys have delivered.
