COLD EQUATIONS: Exploring Cycles of Past Relationships and Recurring Mistakes
Nashville | October 23, 2023: Indie shoegaze band Cold Equations releases their new single “Satellite” on October 23, 2025. Showcasing the band’s dense wall of guitar effects—layered distortion, reverb, and delay- the new single creates an immersive, dreamlike sonic atmosphere that you can get lost in.
With “Satellite”, guitar distortion becomes compositional tools rather than accidents, while the rhythm section provides a steady, hypnotic foundation that anchors the lead guitar above it. The overall effect is simultaneously aggressive and beautiful. Songwriter Drew Kohl’s vocals sit buried deep in the mix, treated almost as another textural element, explaining that the song’s central metaphor emerged during his daily commute. “I was experimenting with different melodic ideas, and when the word ‘Satellite’ fit rhythmically, it felt meaningless at first,” Kohl explains. “But then the line about someone coming back around fell into place, and suddenly the whole concept revealed itself—this image of something orbiting above you, casting a shadow, coming around again and again.”
The track explores the cyclical nature of human behavior, examining how past relationships and old mistakes can return unexpectedly, much like a satellite completing its orbit. The song transforms this astronomical image into something more ominous—a meditation on patterns we can’t seem to break.
“Satellite” features a particularly memorable guitar solo that pushes technical boundaries. Kohl describes the recording process: “We ran this massive modulated fuzz tone through a tiny amp, completely overloading it so it fed back constantly. It was like wrangling a wild animal—you can hear that feedback take over at the end of the solo. It’s definitely controlled chaos.”
True to their independent spirit, Cold Equations tracked the entire song in a single studio day at Nashville’s Smoakstack Studios, working efficiently within the constraints of an indie budget without compromising their artistic vision.
“Satellite” will be available on all major streaming platforms on October 23, 2025.
ABOUT: Cold Equations is a rock trio hailing from Nashville, formed through the collision of musical talents of Drew Kohl (vocals, guitar), Ryan Dishen (drums), and JohnO’Brien (bass).
Disillusioned with the Americana scene in Nashville, Cold Equations is the result of frontman Drew Kohl’s subversive and clandestine songwriting sessions. It was in these late nights that the artist felt free to explore darker themes, drawing songwriting inspiration from classic literature as well as indie rock legends such as Elliott Smith and Johnny Marr.
The name Cold Equations is a reference to the 1954 science-fiction short story “The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin, a moral dilemma of survival and sacrifice.
