Los Angeles, CA | August 4, 2023: Film score composer and solo artist Maxton Waller releases indie rock single “Certain” to all streaming platforms on Friday, August 4th. “Certain” is included in the soundtrack to Universal Pictures feature film The List, to be released to theaters on August 22nd starring Halston Sage, Christian Navarro, and Chrissie Fit (Pitch Perfect), and directed by Melissa Miller Costanzo. Waller, known for his compositions for numerous films and soundtracks, is the film score composer for The List, releases “Greatful”, his second single featured on the soundtrack of the film, on August 11th.
The chorus in “Certain”, “To love yourself is the greatest thing to do”, was written by the artist two years ago when he realized he was ready to pick up the pieces and believe in this message himself. Releasing “Certain” marks a time in his career that he is ready to release music and share with others who may benefit from its positive message.
Waller is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter who wrote and recorded “Certain” in one day in his home studio in Pasadena, CA. He attributes the retro-sound of the song to when he was listening to a lot of Beatles’ recordings. When asked about his influences and method behind writing and production, he believes in the blending of old and new. A fan of country-roots artists such as Johnny Cash and jangle pop from the 80’s and 90’s, Waller draws on inspiration from previous decades to create new music without overthinking it or getting complicated.
“If you want to stay contemporary, you have to listen to older music. The evolution of music is in the production. I like to keep things really simple. I don’t need to over develop anything. The perfect lyrics will say something so clear to express something that is so familiar, so simple, yet never expressed in a song before. “Let It Be”, for example, it’s still a relatable, simple concept.”
