Nashville | July 21, 2023: “Reverie” is the fourth and final single released by the Nashville-based Jangle-Rock trio Cold Equations before the release of their full album in August of 2023. “Reverie”, the French word for “dream”, is about being lost in a memory; lost in a world of things that don’t really exist or feel real.
“Reverie” began as a Johnny Marr-inspired guitar riff by guitarist and frontman Drew Kohl during his very first jam session with Cold Equations drummer Ryan Dishen. The song was an instrumental riff for close to one year until bass player John O’Brien brought the song up during a rehearsal, and a time that songwriter Drew Kohl who is an avid reader was entrenched in the turn of the century French classic by Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time. In the novel, the act of the narrator who tastes his madeleine cake dipped in tea throws him into what he refers as “involuntary memory”. The idea of revealing memories from childhood that otherwise were lost to his subconscious mind made writing lyrics for the song very easy for Kohl.
Drew explains:
“Whenever I go back home, I walk around the places that help me remember things from so long ago. I was deeply inspired by the idea that the taste of a madeleine cake dipped in tea inspires the author’s memories as a child. I was inspired by this idea of “involuntary memory”. – DK
More about Marcel Proust and “In Search of Lost Time”:
In Search of Lost Time follows the narrator’s recollections of childhood and experiences into adulthood in the late 19th-century and early 20th-century high-society France, while reflecting on the loss of time and lack of meaning in the world. This memory is the only one he has of childhood town until years later the taste of a madeleine cake dipped in tea inspires a nostalgic incident of involuntary memory.
ABOUT: Disillusioned with the Americana scene in Nashville, Cold Equations is the result of a subversive and clandestine songwriting operation in the bedroom of guitarist/vocalist Drew Kohl. Seeking refuge in late night writing sessions, Kohl felt free to explore darker themes while drawing from indie rock.
Influences for the band include indie cult classics Pavement, Elliott Smith, and Johnny Marr. After meeting Ryan Dishen (drums) at a punk show and John O’Brien (Bass) the three-piece started writing and rehearsing the material for their next album. ‘Cold Equations’ Kohl tours regularly with outstanding artists in the singer-songwriter, folk and rock genre, most notably with American artist Kiely Connell where they were the opener for Ray LaMontagne for his 2022 tour. Performances included dates at The Chicago Theater and The Louisville Palace among many others. Working with producer Paul Moak and Engineer Zack Zinck, Cold Equations recorded their self-titled album at Smoakstack Studio in Nashville, TN.
The name Cold Equations is a reference to the 1954 science-fiction short story “The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin, a moral dilemma of survival and sacrifice.
