“Lone Wolf” reaches out to anyone lost in self-isolation
BOSTON | April 19, 2024: Singer-songwriter Jodi Heights releases the new song “Lone Wolf” on Friday, April 19th, the first single to be released from her upcoming album ‘Nocturne’. Mixing fierce protectiveness and deep longing, the song explores the tension between self-isolation and connection. Featuring the vocals and piano performance by Heights who has her master’s degree in vocal performance from the New England Conservatory, the song is supported by a string quartet arranged by Cairo Marques-Neto. “Lone Wolf” begins spatially but builds steadily, layer upon layer, enveloping the listener by the end of the piece. In addition to her new single being released to all major streaming platforms in the traditional method of production, “Lone Wolf” will be released in Dolby Atmos, a spatial audio technology for immersive sound. Dolby Atmos allows sound engineers to place individual audio elements in a 3D space around the listener, so instead of just hearing sound from the left or right speakers, you can also hear “Lone Wolf” from above, below, and all around you, creating a more immersive listening experience. “Lone Wolf” is the first song from Jodi’s night-themed album ‘Nocturne’ and her second recording at Futura Productions, working with engineer John Weston who also produces all of her livestream concerts on Patreon.
“I’ve always been a night owl, so writing and recording a whole project centered around loving the dark seemed natural to me. Production-wise, for ‘Lone Wolf’ I wanted a lot of emptiness at the start, and as the orchestration swells, I imagined the strings as a sense of community forming around the listener. That community is the wolf pack calling the listener home.”

Lyrically, “Lone Wolf” counters the idea of rugged individualism with the truth: we all need support and community. Using the metaphor of a wolf separated from its pack, the words lovingly call out to lost souls.
I know you’re hurting
I can hear you howling at the moon
The music‘s playing
But somehow you feel you’ve lost the tune
I’ll help you remember the soaring melody
Of the song your heart used to sing
Come and harmonize with me
“Wolves are one of my favorite animals, but humans have created a lot of misinformation about them. One is the idea of the lone wolf. In literature and art, humans use the term to stand for extreme independence, someone strong enough to leave the pack and strike out alone. But the reality in a wolf pack is much different. Wolves are unquestionably social creatures. Being part of a pack creates safety. Solitary wolves do exist, but only for temporary, transitional periods of time: to find a mate, to establish their own territory, to join or form a new pack, or because they’ve been exiled. If a wolf is alone for too long, survival becomes much more difficult. Because of this, I use the lone wolf as a metaphor for people you love who are isolating themselves. Maybe they’re grieving or recovering from a physical injury or suffering from a mental illness. My song is calling out for them to come back to where they are seen, and known, and loved. Recovery is easier when we have a pack to help us find our way home.”

In addition to releasing “Lone Wolf”, Jodi Heights has also crafted and produced a special edition “Nocturnal Journal” spanning 60 pages. This unique paperback book showcases artwork inspired by her album and includes a variety of thought-provoking prompts aimed at personal introspection on nocturnal experiences. Delving into themes of darkness and the impacts of light pollution, it offers readers a space to explore their relationship with the night.
