Featuring Jodi’s signature powerful vocals and her performance on harmonium
BOSTON | July 12, 2024 Singer-songwriter Jodi Heights releases the official music video for her new single “Full Moon Rise” on Friday, July 12, 2024. This rhythmic celebration of night is her first song written for harmonium, an instrument from the Indian subcontinent. Accompanied by deep, tom drumming, the song sends the listener to a bewitching, spellbinding place.
The official music video for “Full Moon Rise” is a collaboration between director and cinematographer Noah Dickinson and John Weston, recording engineer for the Nocturne album and producer of all Jodi’s livestream concerts on Patreon.
“Full Moon Rise” was released in Dolby Atmos, a spatial audio technology for immersive sound (available on Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, and TIDAL) and standard audio on all streaming platforms. This is the third song from Jodi’s night-themed album ‘Nocturne’ and her second recording at Futura Productions, working with Grammy-nominated engineer John Weston.
The idea for ‘Full Moon Rise’ came from reading about light pollution and over-illumination. Just over a century ago, you could walk out of your door and see thousands of stars, and this view of the universe inspired countless artists. We need the dark. We are starving for it. And yet every year, planetary light levels increase. We associate light with safety and security, but studies show that the opposite is often true. Too much light blinds us, hiding what our night vision could reveal.
“The song ‘Full Moon Rise’ came from reading about the disruption of ecosystems and circadian rhythms caused by the overuse of artificial light at night. It’s natural for humans to want light, and electricity has made it possible to banish the dark if we want to. But nighttime also has important lessons to teach us.
I wanted to write a song encouraging listeners to become more like night creatures: turn off the lights, slow down, let your eyes adjust, learn to be silent, let your ears become sensitive. The dark can teach us how to dream, how to listen, and how to see the world with new eyes.” – Jodi Heights
Lyrically, “Full Moon Rise” is an invitation to explore the dark:

Drowning in electric sun
There is brightness everywhere
Even when the day is done
But the sun set long ago
In the fading light
Do you feel it start to grow?
The desire to break out of this prison

“Full Moon Rise” features the mesmerizing sound of the harmonium:
“This was my first song written for harmonium. Western audiences may not be familiar with this beautiful instrument, originally invented in Europe in the 1700s. It’s a hand-pumped organ that uses bellows to send air through metal reeds. After falling out of popularity in Europe, the harmonium found a second life in India in the late 1800s and continues to be used across the Indian subcontinent. I love its meditative sound and was surprised when ‘Full Moon Rise’ ended up being so upbeat and rhythmic. You never know what journey an instrument will take you on as a songwriter!”
In addition to releasing “Full Moon Rise”, Jodi Heights has also crafted and produced a special edition “Nocturnal Journal” spanning 72 pages. This paperback takes journalers from dusk, into the darkest part of night, to dawn. Delving into themes of darkness and the impacts of light pollution, it offers a space for writers to explore their relationship with night through thought-provoking prompts. The book also showcases artwork inspired by Jodi’s album Nocturne and includes a link to listen to the whole album before it’s officially available on streaming. ABOUT: In the sea of singer-songwriters, Jodi Heights stands out with her classically honed technique and her brilliant lyrics that plumb the depths of everyday life. She holds multiple degrees in music, including a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory.
