“Light In the Gutter” and “Kol HaOlam Kulo”
BROOKLYN | DEC. 8, 2023: Jeremy Fury of Jeremy and the Harlequins lights up the holiday season with two new songs out for Hanukkah, “Lights in the Gutter” and “Kol HaOlam”. Inspired by the idea that there are “Sparks of goodness and positivity in the darkest places”, Fury feels that “when things look bleak, I find it important to try and find some sweetness to the bitterness”, and we cannot agree more.
Known for his distinctive retro-rock n’ roll style, Fury unveils these songs as a testament to the essence of the festival of lights and the resilience inherent in the human spirit.
“Light in the Gutter” was born from an inspiring moment during last year’s Hanukkah festivities at The Gutter, a vibrant bowling alley and bar nestled in Williamsburg. Fury’s involvement in organizing the event, initially coined “Hanukkah in the Gutter,” took a serendipitous turn when his Rabbi suggested the name “Light in the Gutter,” a title that encapsulates the essence of finding positivity in unexpected places. Motivated by this uplifting concept, Fury crafted a song that emphasizes the presence of goodness amidst the darkness, echoing the need to discover sweetness within life’s bitter moments.
While not a traditional Hanukkah song, “Kol HaOlam Kulo” holds its own significance. Originating as a Hasidic song with powerful lyrics translating to “The world is a narrow bridge and our goal is not to be afraid,” Fury was drawn to its profound melody and timeless message. Reflecting on the tumultuous state of the world, Fury envisioned a rock ‘n’ roll rendition that maintains the song’s essence while infusing it with a hard-hitting energy. “To me, it didn’t sound forced to take it in that direction either, it felt natural to go that way,” Fury remarked.
Jeremy Fury’s rendition of “Kol HaOlam Kulo” stands as a testament to resilience, encouraging listeners to confront fear with courage and navigate life’s challenges with unwavering determination.
