Jack looks to share his music and his story with others seeking help with chronic drug addiction
NEW YORK, NY | APRIL 10, 2024: The indie rock scene’s Jack Manley is set to release the third single, “Save Your Own,” from his upcoming EP ‘Unmeasurable Terms’ on April 10, 2024. The song “Save Your Own,” emerged during a critical juncture in Jack’s life, as he underwent treatment for a near-fatal overdose, the consequence of years spent plunging deeper into drug addiction. This pivotal moment occurred within the confines of a hospital room in Poughkeepsie. Armed with nothing but a broken guitar and a newfound desire to live, Jack began to craft melodies from the tapestry of his experiences, which resulted in the release of the previous singles, “Smack Water” and “Tightrope Life,” as well as this new offering. “Save Your Own” serves as a poignant love song, delving into the theme of codependency, urging both oneself and loved ones to prioritize self-care by donning their own oxygen masks first.
In recording “Save Your Own”, Jack opted for a somewhat unconventional approach by recording the guitar and vocals simultaneously in one live take, aiming to capture the rawest and most emotionally resonant sound. The song kicks off with the lead guitar drenched in reverb, serving as an introduction to the EP as a whole, being its opening track. As soon as the rhythm guitar, bass, and vocals join in, there’s a noticeable shift in energy and excitement, reflecting the somewhat manic state of mind the songwriter was in while composing. To complement the interlocking guitars, Jack crafted a bouncing and technical bass line. Josh Eppard of the band Coheed and Cambria, first improvised drum parts by tapping his hands on his legs, with minimal guidance from the artist regarding the desired drum feel. Throughout the chorus, overdubbed chords resonate with a whammy bar, infusing a spacey and surf-inspired vibe, which contrasts nicely with the droning arpeggio and 8th note strumming in the verses. Producer Jeff Berener delivers an inspired and melodic/noisy solo towards the song’s end, elevating it to another level entirely.
“Save Your Own” is a reflection of my relationships and destructive tendencies, ever- wondering why I hurt the people I love the most. It’s an honest appraisal and a lovesick plea. Trying to find reason in the unreasonable state of being which is active addiction.” – Jack Manley
“The downstroke inverted chords that make up the verse take cues from my love of The Strokes, whereas the lead guitar takes cues from post-punk and shoegaze. I find the baseline to be an ode to Interpol, who always have such incredible bass lines.” – Jack Manley
