Come On Home is a collection of 10 finely crafted songs that thematically cover a lot of ground but musically hold true to the styling’s of folk, bluegrass and americana. With the exception of one song “O Captain, My Captain” (which is actually a Walt Whitman poem that Cornell put to music) all the songs off Come On Home are original numbers, the majority of which were written by Cornell and produced by Adam Moss who also plays fiddle on the album.

With three-time Grammy award winning engineer Justin Guip behind the board, the band sounds phenomenal as we really see their musical chops shine through on tracks like the up-tempo bluegrass tune “Liars, Betrayers, and Hellhounds”, and the cleverly penned story about relationships “The Median Song”. In addition to the silky smooth backing vocals of band member Amanda Homi and the virtuoso fiddle work of Adam Moss, we even see a guest appearance from critically acclaimed organist Marco Benevento who provides accompaniment on the albums closing track “Song For Nick”! This final track hits particularly hard as Cornell wrote “Song For Nick” for a personal friend who was ‘falsely accused’ of murder in hopes that the song may bring attention to Nick Hillary’s legal case.

Over the past few years Greg Cornell & The Cornell Brothers have appeared at two Folk conferences (Folk Alliance in Kansas City and NERFA in Kerhonksen, NY), performed at Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT, toured New England and upstate New York and have played at numerous festivals and venues in and around New York City. Now with a new album and a fall tour on the books Greg Cornell & The Cornell Brothers are excited to hit the road and share Come On Home with their devoted and ever growing fanbase.

Biography
Greg Cornell & The Cornell Brothers are a Brooklyn-based, four-piece acoustic roots music band that plays original songs heavily influenced by bluegrass, country, old-timey and blues. Cornell’s songs are influenced as much by his literary heroes (Whitman, Emerson, Thoreau) as they are by his musical ones (John Prine, Gram Parson, Levon Helm, Neil Young, 1970’s bluegrass). He writes stories about regret turning to redemption, and holding onto hope through travail.

Tight three-part harmonies and excellent musicianship (guitar, fiddle, standup bass, percussion) carry the stories along, over mountains and fields, down streams to the ocean.  The band recently completed recording their second album, Come On Home, in March 2016 at Brooklyn Recording, with Justin Guip (Bow Thayer, David Bromberg, three Grammy Awards with Levon Helm) doing the engineering and mixing.  Cornell’s new songs include stories about immigration, the (in)justice system, The Trail of Tears, betrayal, love, work and, of course, hope.

Extended Bio:
Greg Cornell & The Cornell Brothers are a Brooklyn, New York-based acoustic roots music group featuring fiddle, guitar and percussion, along with tight three-part harmonies. Siblings in music (but not in fact), the group has performed at venues and festivals in New York and New England, as well as at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

Inspired by his literary and musical heroes – Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Doc Boggs, Levon Helm, Gordon Lightfoot, Seldom Scene, Neil Young, Doc Watson and Jerry Garcia’s acoustic work — singer-songwriter Greg Cornell writes stories of struggle and regret, ending in hope. He uses nature — especially the mountains and the sea — as settings for his tales of yearning and redemption. The music comes from the genres that stirred him most deeply – bluegrass, country, old-time and blues–styles that provided a natural bed for his stories to lie in, and for people to dance to.

Cornell met bandmate Adam Moss at Brooklyn’s Jalopy Theatre and School of Music where he was a student in Moss’s fiddle class. Moss, an Illinois native who started playing fiddle with the band last year, contributes virtuosic, head-turning playing in various styles as well as vocal harmonies. He works with several other bands and acts — including Session Americana, The Defibulators, Anna Egge, The Brother Brothers (with his twin brother David Moss), and his own band, Moishe’s Circus.

The third Cornell ‘Brother’ is actually a ‘sister,’ and also not really a sibling. Amanda Homi sings harmonies and plays a raft of percussion instruments during live shows, including a cajon with a bass drum kick, a washboard necktie, and a bunch of others. An accomplished singer in many genres, the London-born artist has recorded with Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples and Ray Lamontagne, among others.

Brooklyn, NY // JULY 27, 2016 – After linking up with Post To Wire to premiere the album’s opening ballad “Broken Wings” (LINK), Folk/Americana traditionalists Greg Cornell & The Cornell Brothers are taking it up a notch as they just partnered with Mind Equals Blown (LINK) to share the more upbeat, rocking tune “Heavenly Rain”, a song that showcases a darker and grittier side of the band. Where “Broken Wings” speaks of love, hope and courage, “Heavenly Rain” tells the tale of a desperate man full of regret and in search of redemption.

“One time I missed the opportunity to do something good, and the regret kept coming at me. This song came out of dealing with that. It’s kind of a dream-vision. The man in the story is wandering in a desert, praying for rain to slake his killing thirst. He falls asleep and dreams of the things he regrets. When he wakes up he realizes the way to bring the heavenly rain is to reach up and pull it down.” – Greg Cornell

With it’s swampy groove and dynamic production “Heavenly Rain” is undoubtedly a standout track off of Come On Home. Cornell’s memorable vocal and the driving rhythm section propel the song forward resulting in a tune that could have just as easily been a b-side from the Grateful Dead’s 1977 masterpiece Workingmans Dead, as it is a contemporary and very original blues number. And while we hear and feel the regret and desperation in the songs words and music, there is that familiar twist of hope lying just beneath the surface; a common thread that ties together many of the songs off Come On Home.

“Musically, it’s only one major chord on the verses with a slide to the minor chord, that gives it a bluesy, ethereal feel, so that the bridge is a relief when it goes through the normal one-four-five blues progression. When we recorded it, I kept saying “I wanna do this swampy!” which Jason Nazary the drummer luckily understood and he laid down a very solid but syncopated beat that drove the band.” – Greg Cornell

Engineered by three-time Grammy award winning producer, Justin Guip (Levon Helm’s 2007 album The Dirt Farmerb & 2009’s Electric Dirt), the bands latest effort Come On Home features the virtuoso fiddle playing of Adam Moss, and backing vocals from Amanda Homi, who has worked with legendary artists like Mavis Staples, Jackson Browne, and Ray Lamontagne. Musically, the group draws influence from bands and artists like Neil Young, Old & In The Way, and The Steep Canyon Rangers, and their new album is full of heartfelt acoustic ballads and foot-stomping bluegrass tunes.

Over the past few years the band has appeared at two Folk conferences (Folk Alliance in Kansas City and NERFA in Kerhonksen, NY), performed at Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT, toured New England and upstate New York and played at numerous festivals and venues in and around New York City. Now with a new album on the horizon and a fall tour on the books Greg Cornell & The Cornell Brothers are excited to hit the road and share Come On Home with their devoted and ever growing fanbase.

Brooklyn, NY // JULY 21, 2016 – Folk/Americana traditionalists Greg Cornell & The Cornell Brothers have linked up with the team at Post To Wire to unveil their latest single “Broken Wings”. Set for release in early August “Broken Wings” serves as the opening cut off of the bands forthcoming sophomore release Come On Home; an album whose rootsy textures and stringband-centric arrangements recall the sounds of folk and bluegrass pioneers like Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, and David Grisman.

At its core “Broken Wings” is a love song. A heartfelt, fragile ballad about the desire to find refuge and strength in the arms of a companion and one mans journey to find that comfort.

When asked about the origins and inspiration behind the song Cornell said, “My girlfriend Sarah Johnson wrote the chorus. I filled in the verses with the story of a man who rows and sings every morning on a northern lake; his “holy song” is heard by a white bird in a southern sea, who travels many miles through great hardship to get to him. She arrives, with a broken wing, and he promises to heal and protect her. It’s really about Sarah and me, and all the years we misspent in other relationships, yet we always held out hope.”

Inspired by his literary and musical heroes, Cornell writes stories of struggle and regret, ending in hope. He uses nature, especially the mountains and the sea as settings for his tales of yearning and redemption and we see these inspirational elements clearly at work in “Broken Wings”.

“A lot of inspiration also came from the lakes in the Adirondack Mountains of NY State, where I try to spend as much time as possible, ” Cornell continues.  “They have an almost mystical quality (“black and deep as space”) that is unique.”
