NASHVILLE | May. 5, 2023: Indie Rock band Cold Equations releases “Idenitity Crisis” on May 5, the first single from a self titled full length album to be released in late June to all streaming platforms. Inspired by the feeling of “I don’t know you anymore”, when something very familiar suddenly becomes unfamiliar, lead songwriter Drew Kohl wanted to express the feeling of being faced with someone who is suddenly out of character. The twist is, that he realizes it is himself who is having the crisis.

Drew tells the story of coming to Nashville in 2014 and immediately immersing himself in the traditional “Nashville” style of the “Country-Americana” music genre. At the time he was writing and performing folk songs and dressing the part of what was the Nashville “disguise” of the folk artist. After many years of living and working in this sound, he suddenly shifted to using an electric guitar and finding creative freedom in the indie rock genre that he found incredibly liberating as an artist.

The artist adds:

“The first LP I wrote, “Ghost Town”, was super liberating – I didn’t have to fit into the Country- Americana mold so I felt free to explore new sounds and lyrical themes. The Americana genre started feeling super restrictive and I didn’t really resonate or identify with the aesthetic anymore. So I withdrew from performing for a while and started writing indie rock songs in my bedroom which eventually became the songs on this upcoming album. This is the record I always wanted to make.” – DK

Cold Equations

ABOUT: Disillusioned with the Americana scene in Nashville, Cold Equations is the result of a subversive and clandestine songwriting operation in the bedroom of guitarist/vocalist Drew Kohl. Seeking refuge in late night writing sessions, Kohl felt free to explore darker themes while drawing from indie rock influences including Pavement, Elliott Smith, and Johnny Marr. After meeting Ryan Dishen (drums) at a punk show and John O’Brien (Bass) the three-piece started writing and rehearsing the material for their next album ‘Cold Equations’

Kohl tours regularly with outstanding artists in the singer-songwriter, folk and rock genre. Most notably he toured with American artist Kiely Connell where they were the opener for Ray LaMontagne for his 2022 tour. Performances included dates at The Chicago Theater and The Louisville Palace among many others.

Working with producer Paul Moak and Engineer Zack Zinck, Cold Equations recorded their self-titled album at Smoakstack Studio in Nashville, TN. The album is set to release in June of 2023.

The name Cold Equations is a reference to the 1954 science-fiction short story “The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin, a moral dilemma of survival and sacrifice.

“It’s easy to get lost and not appreciate what you’ve accomplished and never be satisfied with what you’ve done. I think success for me is a life where I’m spending my days with music, learning new things, reading, and writing new songs.”
