Cold Equations Release The Self-Titled Album with the focus track “State Of Mind”
Nashville | August 18, 2023: Cold Equations, a rising indie rock trio hailing from Nashville, announce the release of their self-titled album, Cold Equations. With an origin story steeped in musical evolution and camaraderie, this album represents a bold step forward for the band who explored the realm of jangle-style indie rock icons such as Elliott Smith and Johnny Marr to create 10 brilliant pop-rock songs.
The album was preceded by the successful release of four singles, “Identity Crisis”, “Eraser”, “Set the Boy Free”, and “Reverie”. The album release’s focus track “State of Mind” is filled with sing-along hooks, an anthemic chorus, and expertly crafted vocals and instrumentation. With nods to Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer, Cold Equations brings their own version of guitar-based rock by way of great songwriting, production, and execution.
The journey that led to the creation of “Cold Equations” began back in 2020, before the band even took shape. Frontman Drew Kohl delved into songwriting, setting the stage for what was to become a sonic manifesto of raw emotions and infectious melodies. After recording the breakout track “Identity Crisis,” the idea of Cold Equations started to crystallize, and the path to electric-guitar-infused indie rock took a firmer shape.
In the true spirit of artistic collaboration, Kohl found kindred spirits in Ryan and John. Together, they embarked on a creative exploration that led to regular jam sessions and live performances around the vibrant musical landscape of Nashville. By early 2022, the trio was primed to weave their individual talents into a cohesive album, setting the wheels in motion for “Cold Equations.”
The pivotal moment arrived when Cold Equations booked a week at Nashville’s renowned recording haven, The Smokestack. Teaming up with producer Zack Zinck and Paul Moak, the band channeled the energy cultivated in their basement sessions into an intense studio experience. The clock was ticking, and the band’s well-honed preparation paid dividends as they meticulously tracked all 10 songs in just 5 days.
“Cold Equations,” the eponymous album, is a testament to the band’s artistic journey. “We decided to self-title the album because it embodies our sound and style,” Drew Kohl explains. “The collaborative process of creating this record truly defined us as a band. We’ve grown together as a trio, pouring our hearts and souls into each arrangement, each chord, and each lyric.”
