“LET ME TELL YOU THE MYTH OF THE SELF-MADE MAN”
BOSTON | Feb. 11, 2022 Singer-Songwriter Jodi Heights addresses the ever-growing wealth gap with her new single “The Myth” to be released on Friday, June 24th. With theatrical flair, Jodi begins the track with jazzy, upbeat piano and escalates into big-band glory. Lyrically, “The Myth” at first appears to be an inspiring rags-to-riches story of individual success, but it quickly switches to cheeky truth-telling:
But what he doesn’t say is daddy pays the rent
And mommy’s left her fingerprints on every cent
His parent’s cronies funded every venture made
But with luck and perseverance, you could do the same.
Jodi elaborates on her message:
“The United States has a wider disparity between rich and poor than any other major developed nation. Historically, the last time the wealth gap was this wide was in the Roaring Twenties, a period of economic boom between the world wars. This inequality between classes was partially responsible for the Great Depression, so I decided “The Myth” would take its musical style from that giddy era before everything came crashing down.
The truth is, no one is successful alone. Great achievements are usually the result of a combination of cultural background, good luck, and family wealth and connections. Most people have more obstacles in their way than just working hard, saving, and making good decisions. The deck is already stacked against them when they’re born. I wanted “The Myth” to reveal these unacknowledged advantages and to poke fun at the whole broken system.” – Jodi Heights
“The Myth” is part of Jodi’s second project with Plaid Dog Recording and features some of Boston’s most versatile local artists. This song is the third single from her new 3-song EP, Triptych, a project focused on urgent concerns in our modern world: climate change, the pandemic, and the growing wealth gap. “The Myth” will be followed with a supporting lyric video.
