BROOKLYN | OCTOBER 22, 2021 – On Friday, October 22nd, Georgia Weber and the Sleeved Hearts release “The Ice is Getting Thinner”, a dreamy reimagining of the classic song by Death Cab for Cutie.
The Sleeved Hearts trio is Weber’s project as bandleader, bassist, vocalist, and composer. It is an amalgamation of her extensive experience as a jazz double bassist, along with her time as a songwriter/vocalist with a pop-punk attitude.
During the NYC summer lockdown, the artist found herself taking comfort in listening and reinterpreting songs from the past.
“I couldn’t listen to new music in 2020. I needed familiar, known territory. I needed comfort food. Suddenly there was so much time to practice, to work, and to be creative, but the time very quickly became oppressive. It seemed only right to make a covers record, to honor some of the songs that kept me sane over the year.”
“The Ice Is Getting Thinner” was one of the first covers I played with The Sleeved Hearts back when the band started in 2015. Originally written in 3/4, I communicated with Nathan and Kenji badly at our first rehearsal for this record. It meant Nathan started playing this beautiful open groove in 4 while Kenji and I still thought we were in 3. And it stuck.” – Georgia Weber
The Sleeved Hearts are Nathan Ellman Bell on drums and Kenji Herbert on guitar, with friend and singer-songwriter DM Salsberg adding her own haunting, harmonious vocal lines on this track.
“The Ice is Getting Thinner” was recorded and mixed by Sonny Ratcliff at Wildwood Recording Studio in Brooklyn NY and mastered with Matthew Agoglia at The Ranch Mastering.
One last note – Charlie Van Kirk took samples of the glaciers in Iceland a few years back – and the artist used his sounds of ice crunching and striking as a percussive element throughout the track.
ABOUT: A passionate and dedicated musician, Georgia Weber describes herself as “married to her bass”. Her affinity to her instrument, style, and genre has been inspired by jazz luminaries Scott LaFaro and Charlie Haden. A musical open-mindedness allowed Weber to develop a unique sound, which has painted the lower register for some of the world’s most renowned jazz artists.
Georgia Weber graduated with a bachelor’s in Jazz Double Bass Performance from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, Australia, in 2004. She fronted the pop-punk outfit A Date With Apathy, and then worked in Brisbane Australia as a performer, session musician, and teacher until moving to Melbourne, Australia in 2010.
The artist now resides in New York City where she continues to write, perform and record music with her band The Sleeved Hearts.
